Teaching Assistant / Internship
HECUA’s Scandinavian Programs

HECUA’s Scandinavian programs—the Scandinavian Urban Studies Term (SUST) and the Divided States of Europe: Globalization and Inequalities in the New Europe—require a dynamic, self-motivated teaching assistant to intern in the fall 2009 and spring 2010 semesters.

This is a unique opportunity to work and live abroad in Oslo, Norway, and to participate in and contribute to HECUA’s exciting Scandinavian programs, which critically engage contemporary issues of social justice in both the Scandinavian and the wider European context.  See www.hecua.org/norway.php and www.hecua.org/scand_dse.php for program information and recent syllabi.

The position reports to the Scandinavian Program Director.

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching Assistant
    • Attend most seminar sessions (reading, field, and integration sessions).
    • Read materials for seminar sessions.
    • Assist with small-group facilitation.
    • Prepare and lead occasional seminar sessions (lecture, discussion).
    • Advise on some independent-study projects and provide support as needed.
    • Advise and support students in their cross-cultural experience (adjustment to life in Oslo etc.).
    • Grade assignments (e.g. journals, responses to critical questions).
  1. Coordination of Logistics and Administrative Support
    • Assist the Program Director in coordinating program logistics (field seminars, field trips, and regional homestays), communications (phone, emails, letters), the student services, and the creation of course materials.
    • Assist with the coordination of student volunteer placement/internship logistics (finding new placement opportunities and managing existing placements).
    • Assist in the planning and ongoing evaluation of curriculum and seminar sessions (including team meetings).
    • Participate in occasional organization-wide meetings and initiatives.

Enrollment in Norwegian language classes at the University of Oslo outside of work hours will be required.

Qualifications:
Required
Completion of a bachelor’s degree in the social sciences; proven ability to live/study/work abroad; significant knowledge in program content areas (Scandinavian national identity and welfare states, immigration and multiculturalism, European integration); excellent oral and written communication skills; strong organizational skills; attention to detail; and cultural sensitivity.

Also Desirable
Past participation in the Scandinavian Urban Studies Term, Divided States of Europe, or other HECUA program; teaching experience; knowledge of or background in experiential learning, engaged classroom activities, and applied theory; engaged in community/social change work; and Norwegian language proficiency.

Terms:
The position is 30 hours a week from August 1, 2009, until May 31, 2010.  Applicants must be prepared to remain in this position for both the Fall 2009 and the Spring 2010 semester.  Living and travel expenses plus a food stipend are provided.

HECUA seeks to hire TWO highly motivated, enthusiastic, and organized Recruitment Associates who will join the Marketing, Recruitment, and Student Services team to promote HECUA’s innovative off-campus study programs. The primary purpose of a Recruitment Associate is to represent HECUA on member campuses through recruitment efforts and relationship building with campus contacts.  There are three primary responsibilities in this position: 1) Student Recruitment – To recruit prospective students and convert interest into applications to achieve annual enrollment goals for all programs; 2) Campus Relations – To build, strengthen, and expand relationships with campus representatives and others at member schools in order to better serve the institution; 3) Program Knowledge – To build and maintain detailed knowledge of HECUA’s international and domestic student programs to ensure that students are matched with their most appropriate options.

This position will be based in HECUA’s central office located in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The successful applicant will apply his/her skills in many areas:

  • Recruitment - Conduct campus visits and respond to student inquiries.
  • Advising - Counsel students on program content and “fit” and on admissions requirements.
  • Public Speaking - Present information to students in class visits, information sessions, study abroad fairs in greater Twin Cities area (with opportunities for additional travel out of state) and various faculty forums.
  • Event Planning - Coordinate information sessions and other recruitment efforts at various schools, and work with HECUA alumni.

HECUA is an organization of 18 liberal arts colleges, universities, and associations dedicated to education for social justice. At the core of our work we shape academically rigorous, off-campus study programs that address the most pressing issues in our neighborhoods, nations and world. HECUA uses community-based learning methods to explore the dynamic relationships between theory and practice and to equip students with skills and knowledge for building just communities and societies. Our international program sites exist in Bangladesh, Ecuador, Northern Ireland and Norway. Domestic programs, based in Minnesota, focus on issues of poverty & inequality, art and writing for social change, and environmental sustainability.

Qualifications: Required: B.A., strong communication skills, excellent organizing skills, ability to work independently, attention to detail, and vehicle for travel.

Preferred: familiarity with HECUA, experience with sales / recruitment, database knowledge, commitment to experiential & community based learning and social justice issues.

Terms: This is a permanent, full-time, annually renewable position. The starting salary ranges from $28,400 to $31,000, depending on experience. Competitive benefits include medical and dental insurance, life and disability insurance, paid time off, and a 403(b) retirement plan. The anticipated start date for the position is August 3, 2009.

IATP seeks a full-time communications assistant to do print, Web-based and media communications, with a special emphasis on editing and proofreading. The applicant will work in a fast-moving, team-based environment to implement an organization-wide communications plan, as well as more targeted issue-based work. 

Responsibilities

Position Description: Looking to work with energetic, idealist teens from around the world?  Each summer since 1979, a dynamic environment is created at the Global Youth Village that emphasizes experiential learning and challenges young people to turn cross-cultural theory into practical action. This year 100+ teens from around the world will participate. Workshops address issues concerning young people today, such as war and peace, distribution of world resources, prejudice, and the effects of social pressures. Cultural programming and cooperative living help participants learn to respect differences and discover similarities that transcend cultural, religious, political, and language barriers.

Positions are open for teachers / trainers.  The Global Youth Village workshop staff are experienced teachers or facilitators. Applicants are expected to have previous professional teaching experience in the workshop / topic area applied for.  Experience in curriculum design, experiential training methods, and working with multicultural groups is also preferable.

Dates: June 16 – July 17 OR thru August 10, 2009.  Positions are residential and include housing and meals plus $1200 - $1600 salary, depending on length of employment.

St. Mary’s Episcopal Church (an Americorp Intern Program)
New York City, New York

New York Intern Program is a service-learning year for young adults to engage in hands-on, progressive social service and intentional community. We are based at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in West Harlem, New York City.

We are committed to social justice and urban ministries.  NYIP exposes young adults to the complexities of systemic injustice while empowering them to explore and enact faith-filled responses.  Our interns learn about themselves and the world in preparation for becoming leaders.

We accept applications from people of all backgrounds and faiths (including no or uncertain faith).  We are housed in an activist, diverse and historic Harlem church and are looking for interns who will derive meaning and inspiration from this community.

The interns must be between 21 and 30 years old and come to NYIP from the end of August through mid-August the following year.  The five interns share an apartment in the church as an intentional community, and are invited to participate in the worship life and social action happening in and around St. Mary’s.

Examples of internships include working with foster children, former inmates, formerly homeless families and individuals, recent immigrants – doing case work, vocational training, micro-economic development, administering start-up programs, teaching in education-reform charter schools, providing social support.

Throughout the year, interns participate in an abundant array of ongoing support and formation facilitated by NYIP staff, including four Retreats. Regarding the practicalities: our interns receive a stipend of approx $500 a month, health insurance, rent + utilities, high-speed Internet, free unlimited access to public transportation, an end-of-year Relocation Allowance ($350), three dinners a week, four Retreats, and through AmeriCorps, forbearance on federal student loans and an end-of-year education grant of $4,725.
