Who doesn't love corn dogs, spaghetti on a stick, and human heads carved into gigantic chunks of butter? The Minnesota State Fair is coming our way and this year, for the first time in HECUA's history, we'll have a booth in the Education Building! HECUA will be using the State Fair venue to promote our off-campus study programs that build academic-community partnerships for social change. The fair offers us the opportunity to build on our positive reputation with member schools, and connect with potential students, parents, and community members.
We’re very excited to participate, and hope that you take a few minutes to stop by to say hello. Whether your a student considering one of our programs or a parent who simply wants to learn more about our offerings we’d love to connect. Stop by and share the glory of the State Fair with HECUA.
HECUA is excited to announce the recent hire of Jeffrey Lugowe as the teaching assistant for the Scandinavian Urban Studies Term (SUST) and Divided States of Europe: Globalization and Inequality in the New Europe (DSE) programs for the 2008-09 academic year. This position will be directly involved with both instructional and administrative aspects of the programs, helping Tim Szlachetko in everything from crafting seminar sessions to advising students to coordinating group logistics.
Jeff brings to HECUA a remarkable range of experiences that make him an ideal fit for the SUST/DSE TA position. As a current Fulbright grantee based at the UiO, he is exploring the challenges faced by Polish migrant workers and their families in Norway’s historically homogeneous society—an issue at the very heart of DSE. He is also exploring related issues such as welfare-state use among new arrivals and the persistent economic-development gaps within a “united” Europe—issues investigated in both SUST and DSE. Before his Fulbright grant, Jeff studied at Brown University, where he graduated magna cum laude with a BA in Slavic studies. His Slavic studies major brought him to Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, for a full year of coursework in Polish language, politics, and history (our DSE students also do a joint project with Jagiellonian students during their Poland field visit). He later interned at the Warsaw headquarters of the Campaign Against Homophobia. Between his time in Poland and his current work in Norway, he has achieved near fluency in both the Polish and Norwegian languages. Finally, on top of all these accomplishments, Jeff has solid teaching credentials. He has taught intensive German and Czech courses for undergraduates at Brown and ESL at a summer school in Germany. He has also designed his own course on modern Poland.
Jeff begins the TA position on August 1. We will be adding a photo and bio to our staff/faculty information page, along with contact details shortly.
HECUA’s Graduate Fellowship Program on Philanthropy and Human Rights has now come to a close. HECUA continues to promote ways to conduct experiential community-based research and also offers a multitude of different graduate-level fellowship opportunities on a new resource page.
Don’t miss the 37th annual conference of the National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE), Sept 24-26, 2008, in Orlando, Florida.
Detailed conference schedule and registration at http://www.nsee.org/
The conference features workshops for beginning, intermediate, and advanced practitioners, and a range of in-depth sessions on student learning and assessment, program design and pedagogy, institutional advancement, theory and practice, and cutting edge issues in experiential and community-based education. A highlight of this year’s conference is a plenary by David A. Kolb, who has been a driving force in shaping experiential education in America for over 25 years. His current work is on integrating the development of students, faculty, curriculum, and institutions around a vision and practice focused on learning, experience, and the creation of meaning. Dr. Kolb is on the faculty of Case Western Reserve University. HECUA staff members and colleagues from HECUA member schools will be at this year’s conference. Please come join us.
HECUA students contribute vital energy, new ideas, and critical reflection to the work of our community partners. Often students work on projects that would not have been possible for organizations to launch without the student’s semester long, 200 hour commitment to the work. We ask that our internship partners supervise and mentor students, involve them in community projects, provide direction for study projects, and serve as resources in student and faculty seminars. Are you interested in learning more about hosting an intern? If so please contact HECUA’s manager of internship and community partnerships, Emily Seru at 651-287-3313. More information, including an application form, can be found on our community partner webpage.
