In February 2008, the HECUA Executive Committee of the Board of Directors unanimously approved Minneapolis Community & Technical College’s request to become an Affiliate Member of the Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs (HECUA).

Minneapolis Community & Technical College's (MCTC) vision is to be an institution that transforms the community by educating students who are globally aware, engaged citizens, skillful at their work and lifelong learners. MCTC joined HECUA as an affiliate member based on the shared commitment to civil rights education, but also to explore other common goals, such as assessing student learning in civic participation. MCTC and HECUA have been collaborating on the Race in America program since 2006, when MCTC professor Lena Jones (Political Science) was invited to direct the program and the MCTC campus became home to reading and discussion seminars that frame the field study. Also in 2006, the MCTC Foundation created a scholarship program to fund MCTC students participating in the Race in America program. Students return to campus to participate in civic engagement activities, community and service learning projects, academic internships, and the annual MCTC Celebrate the Dream event honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The affiliate membership seeks to serve several purposes: (a) to acknowledge the shared programmatic goals of HECUA and MCTC in offering the Civil Rights program; (b) to provide opportunities for the college community to learn more about other HECUA programs and resources; and (c) to facilitate MCTC students in enrolling in and receiving academic credit for participation in HECUA student programs. A key connecting point for HECUA at MCTC will be the Center for Civic Engagement, a collaboration of faculty, students, and community organizations working to dissolve the walls that separate campus and community, and disciplines and groups within the college itself.
After Lena Jones began teaching and leadership with HECUA, Michael Kuhne (English) also served for some years on HECUA's board. Both continue to be valuable allies to HECUA's work on and off campus, and are resources for students interested in learning more about HECUA, or ways to be engaged in community, in general.
Application Process
MCTC follows HECUA's deadlines for all programs. All pieces of the HECUA application are submitted directly to the HECUA office.
